One of the most unique sceneries are the enormous lakes in the middle of the oasis. There are four mayor salt lakes in Siwa, from East to West: Zeytoun (the largest), Maraqi or Fatnas lake, Bahei Din lake and Shiata. All lakes are very safe to swim in, the saline leves are so high that you automatically float.
Siwa’s present problem is not the scarcity of water, rather too much water and not enough drainage. The level of the lakes has been rising, causing much harm to the neighbouring cultivated land and villages.
