The Great Sand Sea:

Egypt's Sahara desert

The oasis of Siwa is at the border of the so called Grand Sand Sea, situated  in the westernmost part of Egypt, where it extends into Libya. It is actually the beginnig of the Sahara desert, and streches over the whole of North Africa. It’s the largest desert in the African continent (around 31% of its land) and contains some of the largest dunes in the world. This vast desert started to form around 7000 years ago, due to retreating rains, forcing humans living there to move.

Did you know this huge desert was once an ocean floor?! There are numerous places in wich in which we can find fossilized marine life, like sea shells and even fossilized whale skeletons.
