Um Ubeyda:

A treasure along the road

This almost totally ruined temple, was once the second most important temple in the oasis dedicated to the god Amun. It
was originally connected to the temple of the oracle by an elevated way and it was elaborately decorated with hierogliphics, some of which can still be found on the standing wall. It was build under king Nectanebo II, in the 30th dinasty (around 350 BC).

In 1811 the temple suffered from damage by an earthquake but it was not until 1897 that the temple was mostly destroyed, when a Cairene governor decided to blow it up with dynamite to use the stones for the towns mosque and the police station. What the severe hand of time couldn’t do, was accomplished by ignorance.

It is believed to be siwas only funerary temple as the inscription shows the ritual of the ‘opening of the mouth’. It is very rare though to find this text on a temple wall, as they were mostly found on papyri or coffins. However when it appears on a temple, it was usually a funerary monument
